On August 19 the Alumni Association inducted its third class of Hall of Fame athletes. The inductees covered a time range of 1939 to 1992. Ross Leakey graduated in 1939 and was a state champion in cross country and track. He was represented by his granddaughters. From the class of1940 we inducted Don Bruick who was not only a star athlete in cross country, basketball, and track, but he went on to coach the North Side basketball team to the state finals in 1955. At 95 years young, Don represented himself.
Representing the 1950’s were Froncie Gutman, 1952 and Ron Bowman, 1957. Froncie was not only an All State football and basketball player, but he also went on to fame at Purdue. Ron was as state champion in cross country and track. Froncie was unable to make the ceremony, but Ron was on hand to pick up his award
Jack Hallenbeck, class of 1960, came all the way from Arizona to receive his award. In Jack’s years at North Side, he consistently qualified and placed at the state meet in track. Also, in the 60’s, Duane Rowe began his coaching career at North Side. During his years as cross country and track coach, he had state championships in both sports. Even though he is currently bound to a wheelchair, he accepted the award himself.
From the 1970’s we honored two superior athletes. Alan McGee,1975, was exemplary at both football and basketball which he maintained when he went to Wright State University. Even with his busy schedule as a surgeon, he accepted his award in person. The other honoree from the 1970’s was Jan Powers Laguardia, 1977. She was one of the first three sport female star athletes in North Side history. She was unable to accept the award, but she was represented by her sister Kay.
Dawn Frisinger Todor graduated from North Side in 1992. During her years as a student at North, she competed in three sports and excelled in all three. She made it to the state level in golf twice. She later taught at North and coached both the girls’ and boys’ golf teams. She represented herself at the induction.
Duane Brown covered the years from 1968 to 1996 at North Side. First, he was the football coach and then he became only the third athletic director in the school’s history. During his tenure, North Side expanded from 8 sports to 22. Duane accepted the award himself.
