2021 Scholarship Recipients
Mahlet Abebe will be the first in her family to attend college. She will be studying to become a pharmacist. While she was attending North Side she was active in dance and tennis. Mahlet was also a part of the TRIO Upward Bound program which motivates students to succeed in their post high school education. We awarded Mahlet an Alumni Scholarship.
Studying for a career in social work came to Avery Belch-Watson after she was sure that she was headed to be an educator just like her mother. Her years at North Side changed her goal. While at North Side she participated in soccer all four years and helped with the Champions Together program. She will be pursuing her degree at Ball State University. Avery received an Alumni Scholarship.
Ronald Collins interned with the Alumni Association this year. In his four years he played football, basketball, and track. He added baseball in his senior year. He also helped with Champions Together. He received the first ever Phil and Froncie Gutman Scholarship Ronald will be attending the University of St. Francis to study business.
Oscar Harrison is a Dixie Durr scholarship recipient. This scholarship is awarded to a student in the arts. He was in all bands: marching, jazz, and concert all four years at North Side. Oscar is torn between attending IU or Bowling Green State University. His dream is to work in media/broadcasting, specializing in production.
Alicia Jen was awarded the Zwick Lee Memorial Scholarship. She will be attending Indiana University in the fall and will study psychology. While Alicia was at North Side, she was on the volleyball and softball teams. She was named to the All SAC team in volleyball. In addition she volunteered to help with Champions Together and Kids Surviving Cancer.
During his high school career, Joseph Kiper competed in baseball and swimming. He also volunteered with the Champions Together program. He finished in the top ten in his class. Joseph was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Scholarship. He will be attending Purdue University to study actuarial science.
Every year the alumni association awards a scholarship to a child or grandchild of an Alumni Association member. This person does not need to be a North Side student. This year’s recipient attends New Tech at Wayne High School. Martina Leppeck is the daughter of 1992 graduate Elizabeth Leppeck. At New Tech she was involved with the Great American Cleanup and Canstruction. Martina will be studying software engineering at Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Ball State University is the school of choice for Grace Mancia. She plans on getting her degree in psychology. She received one of the Alumni Scholarships. Grace was very active at North. She ran cross country and track, was part of the marching band, and helped with Champions Together and Kids Surviving Cancer.
Janeh Oh was active all four years on the soccer team and also participated in track. He is a recipient of on of the Alumni Scholarships. His plan is to attend Indiana Purdue University in Indianapolis. At this point he is not sure about his area of study.
Included in the many activities in which Simon Pommer participated at North Side were marching band, jazz band,concert band, pep band, and swimming. Now that he had completed his high school years, Simon will be heading to Indiana University. There he will be working toward a degree in linguistics. He received one of the Dixie Durr scholarships.
Ei Ei Pyo completed her education at North Side as 3rd in her class. She was active in marching band, tennis, swimming, soccer and helped with Kids Surviving Cancer, Student Council, Upward Bound and Canstruction. She will be pursuing a degree in social works at IUPUI. Ei Ei was awarded the Lee Family Scholarship.
By finishing her years as second in her class, Alexis Robinson received the Snyder Scholarship. In addition to her academics, she was in marching band, competed in tennis and swimming, and helped with Champions Together and Kids Surviving Cancer. Alexis will be attending IUPUI to study for a career in social work.
Shelby Romines will be attending Purdue Fort Wayne this fall. Her intention is to major in education and become a math teacher. She received the Sue Poplett Owen Teacher Scholarship. While at North Side she was in marching band and played four years on the softball team.
Omar Saad ended up in the top ten in his class. He also enjoyed playing soccer for North Side. Omar is heading to Purdue University this fall to study nuclear engineering. The alumni association awarded him an Alumni Scholarship.
Aja Wilson was active in North Side’s football program and helped the athletic trainer with the softball team. He also was a part of the Young Life program all four years. Aja was awarded the Tom Garman Scholarship. His plan is to attend the University of St. Francis. His area of study will be education.
